I have just returned home following a 'Gastroscopy' This is where a camera is inserted into the stomach through the mouth and down the oesophagus. I was there because of a suspected stomach ulcer. I was given an option and I chose a throat spray, rather than a sedative, as the effects are short-lived.
The nurse who completed all the forms and checked my blood pressure, pulse and oxygen levels, before the examination, reassured me by stressing that the local anaesthetic would do its job. The nurse said from personal experience provided I remained calm and collected I would not experience any discomfort. They were absolutely right!
I was conscious throughout the procedure. The whole experience was painless and stress-free. The staff - a doctor and three nurses - were first class! They are probably performing this investigation day in and day out but they treated me with the utmost respect, care and consideration. They explained every step as we went along. The tube was only inside me for 4 or 5 minutes maximum. Afterwards the doctor explained their findings and gave me a copy of the report that would be sent to my GP. Although my throat was numb I could speak clearly and could ask any questions that I had.
A nurse then showed me the way back to reception and took the time to explain that after 30 minutes I could resume eating and drinking. I was handed the relevant booklet containing aftercare advice that also contained a telephone contact number to use should I have any concerns. I was at the hospital a total of no more than 90 minutes.
I cannot praise the staff highly enough. Well done to all concerned.
If you are about to undergo this procedure, and you are worried or concerned - don't be. I am the world's worst patient and can honestly say, with the right mindset, the whole thing can be a breeze.
