"No communication and waiting too long"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurosurgery (Ward 64 – 66)

(as a service user),

Referred to neurology from GP end of October 2016.

First appointment February 2017 with locum consultant

MRI scan March 2017

3 weeks after MRI Locum consultant confirms MS diagnosis over phone (only after detective work to find email address) – advises referral to QEUH neurology (named consultant).

May 2017, no news from QEUH neurology. Phoned up named consultant secretary advised 26 week wait.

Very unhappy. Have just waited 26weeks! Have a diagnosis but no information how to plan and to deal with diagnosis.

What has happened to 18 week referral to treatment RTT targets? [The 18 Weeks RTT is a whole journey waiting time standard from initial referral to the start of treatment].

Dear Sjoy

Thank you for posting on Patient Opinion. I have shared your post with the Chief Nurse for Regional Services who asked me to pass on her apologies for receiving the diagnosis over the telephone, the lack of communication and the subsequent wait for the referral. Unfortunately, due to the demands on the service we are unable to meet the 18 week treatment time guarantee.

Can you please contact me at Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with some personal details including your date of birth so that the Chief Nurse can look into this further? I would be grateful if you could quote the reference number: 365941.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Dear SJoy

Thank you very much for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I would like to convey my sincere apologies for the way your diagnosis was confirmed with you. This is not the standard that we would expect and I am sorry as this must have been upsetting.

I hope you found it helpful to talk with our Lead Nurse who has confirmed an appointment has been made for you in early July. I appreciate this is further away than you would wish and would like to convey that if you have any further concerns or questions please do not hesitate to contact the MS specialist nurse or Lead Nurse who would be happy to assist you.

Kind Regards

Elaine Burt, Chief Nurse, Regional Services
