"Open, honest and sensitive care"

About: Victoria Hospital / Medical High Dependency

(as a relative),

My sister in law who suffered from the progressive form of MS was admitted to MHDU recently where she sadly died. In the days and nights we spent in the Unit, not only was my sister in law cared for by the staff, but so were we as a family. From a nursing perspective I would particularly like to thank Margaret and Cathy who provided much of the care. They were warm, friendly, professional and caring and dealt with us sensitively at a difficult time.

The medical staff were equally supportive and in particular I would like to mention Ian Y who had the difficult job of discussing the situation with us and supporting us in the process of coming to terms with the fact that our family member was unlikely to survive. The doctor who was on night duty on the night of my sister in law's death was also incredible, he dealt with us openly, honestly, sensitively and with understanding, which I will never forget. I am sorry I did not catch his name but he was tall, handsome, irish and a credit to the medical profession.

When death faces a family it is tough; however it is made more manageable when staff provide dignified care and treat people humanely. I have singled out a few individuals who were exceptional; however I recognise there was a whole team who supported us at this time and wish to thank every one of them. The auxiliary who made us toast will never know how much it helped us get through the night. Thank you all very much from all the family.

Dear Loums3

Thank you for taking the time to express your appreciation to the staff in MHDU at what must be a difficult time for you and your family.I hope my slow response does not cause you any further upset.I am delighted that the care and compassion afforded to you and your relatives made a very difficult situation more manageable.I will pass on your kind words to the staff involved.
