I hate to leave a negative review knowing how much pressure the NHS is under however I had a terrible experience here. Having suffered abdominal pain and extreme swelling for weeks, I have been in frequent contact with my GP. I have had abnormal blood test and stool sample results and have been put forward for urgent tests and scans. I was advised by my GP to visit A&E if my symptoms worsened, and after further days of pain, vomiting and a stomach that constantly looked 9 months pregnant I couldn't take it anymore. The reception staff and triage nurse I saw were lovely, however after a 3 hour wait to see a consultant I was made to feel like a time waster. The consultant said that A&E was "for people who were actually dying" and he didn't know why my GP had advised to visit. I was in shock at this comment - I had sat in a waiting room with people with minor injuries such as twists and sprains, yet my clearly visible symptoms and distress were dismissed. I left in tears, feeling belittled and frustrated with no help, no pain relief and no answers. I was reluctant to visit, having lost my father to cancer on my 21st birthday I hate hospitals but also do not wish to further burden staff unless I feel I really need the help.
I am still waiting for further scans 2 weeks later and I cannot get that consultants comment out of my mind. I would be reluctant to seek further help in the future based on my experience here.
"Left feeling belittled and dismissed"
