"Waiting in corridor"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My mother in law was admitted to A&E at Monklands on a Friday evening recently. She lay in a room for hours, after being told by her gP this was an urgent admission. Anyway the emergency department area closed at 8pm due to shortage of staff so the people that were in that area had to be moved. My mother in law was then moved to a corridor and lay in that corridor for 3 hours or so and no doctors came to see her. She was then eventually moved into a room and eventually seen on Saturday. It was the being kept in a corridor for that length time. She is a very frail lady now and she wasnt the only one being kept in that area. The poor poor nurses were run ragged and it just felt chaotic.

Dear Allye

I was sorry to hear of the experience that your mother in law had within our accident and emergency department. This is not the standard of care that we aim to deliver to our patients.

I would ask if you could contact our patients affairs team to give them further information to allow me to look into this.

Kind regards

Morag

Dear AllyE

Thank you for posting your experience of your Mother in Laws care at Monklands, I'm sorry this was not more positive for you.

Please be assured decisions to have patients waiting outside of cubicles is never taken lightly however there are times when the hospital is particularly busy that such a decision is taken. I would expect staff to explain this and give regular updates, keeping both patients and their families informed. Patient safety is always our priority and during any delays the nursing staff make sure patients are comfortable and monitored appropriately.

It's important we learn from the feedback we receive, I would be grateful if you would consider contacting Melanie MacLean, Patient Affairs Manager on 01236 713065, so that we may look into your Mother-in-Laws care.

Kind regards

Ruth
