I had a Tonsillectomy, the results have proven that it was long, long, long over due. From first raising the issue of a tonsillectomy to the procedure, being released and after care I only have 2 complaints. The first that after the procedure there were no beds available and I was kept in recovery for over 2 hours. I was forced to stay on a narrow trolley unable to get up and walk around or have a cup of tea nor put my dressing gown on. I am 6ft 3 and the trolleys are narrow and recovery is very cold. I'm highly active and have Tourettes. At no point was any of these taken into consideration until I complained. At one point the staff had convinced themselves that I was 'suffering from the effects of the drugs' I am simply very quick at recovering from an operating. My humour in an attempt to alleviate my anxiety was not appreciated nor understood. Although I was taken to a separate area (on the trolley to which I could not leave) to enable me to attend to my Tourettes I felt captive like a prisoner with no rights with no relief for my anxiety or distress.
The day after my scabs fell I coughed up a blood clot and started bleeding. I admitted myself to A+E following advise from 111 and I was admitted for overnight observation pending emergency surgery the next day if the bleed hadn't stopped. thankfully the bleed stopped. I tried talking to a young ENT doctor but was told that 'if I don't know the name of what I am talking about then perhaps I should go away and ask when I do' (or words to that effect) and another young ENT doctor I was talking to refused to accept the reason I was taking medication for and wrote down their own reason to explain my daily medication to their own satisfaction. As this information is not life threatening I did not argue the point. However I find the lack of listening and/or understanding from the two young doctors extremely disappointing!
The hardest thing about writing reviews is when you highlight the 'not so nice' parts the rest can fall to the wayside.
Do not knock the hospital for a few flaws as no one is perfect. Poole Hospital is wonderful and a resounding success even considering tight budgets and difficult times. The vast majority of staff are friendly and caring even to the most difficult of patients which seem to plague the NHS at the moment. I've witnessed aggressive and violent patients with the tiniest of ailments be abusive towards staff and those patients suffering the most and in the greatest of pain have nothing but the kindest words even at their lowest points.
Poole Hospital and its staff work towards excellence. They provide the best care in the most friendliest of atmosphere. I dread the day I ever need the services of a hospital again and find the only option is Bournemouth.
