About: Marie Stopes International Manchester Centre

When I arrived in the morning there was protestors outside but I was quickly greeted with a smiling receptionist who welcomed me in and told me to ignore the leaflets that the protestors tried to give me. I was checked in and told that to protect the privacy and dignity of myself and other ladies I wouldn'tt be allowed to take my friend with me to the consultation or or surgery which I understood. I waited to be called in for a consultation and scan. The wait was about 40 minutes but there was lots of ladies waiting and only 3 rooms for consultation so I was happy that the nurses were not rushing and giving everybody the extra time that they needed. At first I was annoyed I had waited so long but I told the nurse about the domestic violence I had been through and realised that or consultation had taken almost 30 minutes and then I realised that the nurses are very considerate and give everybody the time that they need which is why the wait was so long and I was not angry anymore. The nurse asked me if I wanted to know how far gone I was and I said no. To this day I still don't know how far gone I was because they helped keep it a secret from me like I asked. I had to have a pre treatment before my surgery because I was further gone than others. It was uncomfortable to have my legs in stirrups but I understood there was no other safe position to have me in. I asked the nurses if they could put my legs up whilst I was asleep for the next part of the procedure but they told me that they did about 20 abortions a day and I'f they helped every lady put their legs up whilst they were asleep under anaesthetic their backs would be ruined. I totally understood this. I wanted my friend to be with me after my pretreatment but there was other ladies in the room with me and If we were all allowed a friend or family member then the room would be very crowded and scary so in a way I was glad. I had a snooze and was woken up to be given morphine which made me feel even more relaxed. After about 4 hours of the pretreatment I was taken in to surgery where I was put to sleep under general anaesthetic. - nurse told me I would start to feel strange and tingly and it was all normal and I shouldn't be frightened. The next thing I remember was that I was on a recliner chair eating biscuits and drinking tea. I asked to get dressed but was told that it's probably best to check my bleeding first as sometimes it can be heavy and get on your clothes so they recommended I stay in their sarong until I know what it's like. Luckily my bleeding wasn't too bad so I got myself dressed. They tried to get me up quite quickly after my treatment and although I felt tired and a bit groggy I knew it was the right thing to do as I am a nurse myself and know you can have retained clots if you sit down for too long after Gynae surgery which can cause you lots of pain. After about an hour they gave me some aftercare advice before sending me home with some antibiotics. Thank you so much
