Had a shoulder arthroscopy as a day case through the NHS. From day 1, I thought I would be treated as an NHS Patient instead of a Private Patient. How wrong I was! I was given as much courtesy, respect and dignity as I could imagine. Everything was explained in detail leaving me with no questions to ask. On the op day I arrived early so was shown to the comfy reception waiting area but within a couple of minutes I was escorted to my own room (which was more like a hotel room). A nurse quickly came to book me in and explained everything even how to put my 'knickers' & 'stockings' on! I do suffer with 'Whitecoat' which has caused issues with pre-ops and so was anxious. The anaestatist soon calmed me down on their visit to my room by explaining thatthey had 'done their homework' and obtained all my notes from my GP which confirmed my 'Whitecoat' condition. Within an hour of my booking in, I was on my way to theatre. Going under was easy and painless aswell as the recovery as I was assigned a theatre nurse who was there when I went under and at recovery. Back in my room and my assigned nurse took care of me on a 30 minute cycle making sure I was alright all time. I had a very nice sandwich with 'proper' tea (cup saucer and t-pot etc) to my liking. Food was ordered prior to op with so many choices! I was discharged by 14:00 and home for 15:00. My follow up physio session a week later was also handled with as much compassion as I could possibly imagine. Thank you to all my 'team' particularly my consultant, theatre nurse and ward nurse plus anyone else who I didn'y see. You all made a very nervious, anxious, scared and apprehensive 43 year old feel comfy and with as much dignity, respect and professionalism that everyone would expect.
