"Friendly, caring & informative"

About: The Great Western Hospital / Maternity

After having a traumatic induced long 1st labour ending in an emergency c-section with our 1st child, I was worried about what the birth of my 2nd child would bring. My 2nd labour at GWH was so different and I felt the process & care/support was so much better from start to finish.

I was lucky enough to have a much quicker natural delivery this time which meant I had the same midwife from the beginning to the end of labour. The midwife was so helpful & caring, and made me feel at ease. They also made sure I was coping throughout labour & asked regularly if there was anything else I needed - pain relief, gym ball, more comfortable position etc.

Following our sons birth, he was unexpectedly taken to the special baby care unit due to breathing difficulties, but they made sure we were able to visit him. I was keen to breastfeed him as soon as possible, but before this was possible, they sat with me & patiently helped me to express milk, so that he could still be fed my milk through a syringe.

On top of this, the team who prepared me in case of c-section surgery & helped me to deliver my son were great - explaining what was happening at every stage.

Following delivery, we were given a private room as our son was in the special baby care unit, as the team felt it would be unfair to put me on a ward with other Mummy's that had there baby's with them. When each shift changed, the new members of staff were always friendly & introduced themselves & explained they would be taking over my care. Although not requiring it as much this time, my need for pain relief was checked more regularly than when I was in with my 1st child. Also, the information given when I was discharged seemed a lot more informative this time.

All in all my 2nd experience of child birth at GWH was a really positive one & I wanted to thank the team for all the care/support I received & for doing everything they could to give me the natural birth I had so longed for.

Many thanks, one very happy Mummy & baby :-)
