About: Oaklands Hospital

After much worrying and anxiety about having a double haemorrhoidectomy operation for 2 weeks i entered Oaklands at 3:30pm , Within an hour i was taken to a consultancy room where i had a nice open and informal chat with my surgeon who spent a great deal of time answering every question i had, i was also informed a new machine had been installed in the theatre which may make the operation much easier to cope with this was really good news, it has to be noted the surgeon was fantastic at explaining the procedure and even drew diagrams at my request to help understand, their calm and confident demeanour was a real reassurance i was in very professional hands, a nurse entered to do some final questions and checks, the nurse also was professional and friendly and even manged to make me laugh through it all, now i had no fear about the procedure but knew pain is to be expected after surgery, as you would right?, i was quickly taken for an enema and change then straight into the anaesthetic room, now it gets better still, normally the nurses can not put the iv needle into my veins because they dont rise and are very hidden so its always been around 5 attempts in both hands on previous operations and then gas and air when they give up, the anaesthetist and his assistant got it perfect in one go, if miracles could happen at that point it felt like it just did, cue blackout.

woke up in a nice fresh and very clean room to which the nurse politely offered me tea or coffee with some biscuits and turned the tv on for me, minutes later i had a pot of tea and 6 biscuits, it just struck me there was no pain at all, none whatsoever, now this was mind blowing, note i have had previously had a HALO operation which when i came round was sheer agony, proceeded to eat the biscuits and drink the tea, after ten minutes i went to urinate with no problems whatsoever and was discharged when my partner arrived an hour later.

After all the bad experiences in the past with operations i would recommend this hospital without a shadow of a doubt. to all the staff, nurses and surgeons i can not express my gratitude enough for making this a positive experience.
