"MRI scan problem"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Xrays & Scans

(as a relative),

Husband attended Crosshouse hospital for MRI scan in January 2017 to investigate a fistula. In February, he presented to GP regarding testicular discomfort which has resulted in urgent referral for suspect cancer, and has now had surgery to remove the same. Mentioned recent MRI scan urology clinic appointment and when displayed on screen myself and my husband could clearly see the tumour, despite not being trained to read MRI scans. We are frustrated that this was not noticed on the initial scan, and the implications could have been very significant. Although the scan was not intended to look for this, we feel it should have been noted as an incidental finding. While the benefit to my husbands of raising this after it has happened may be minimal, we are keen that it results in lessons being learned.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Xhparent,

I am so, so sorry for all the distress and discomfort your husband has had and the diagnosis that followed. You make a valid point about 'incidental findings' and this does happen on occasion. Not having details, I cann't comment specifically at this point.

If you would like to contact me and give me some details, we can look into this. We can then talk about what you may want next, perhaps to talk or meet with a member of staff. We too are keen that we learn any lessons.

My email address is eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk and my phone number is 01563 826222.

Kindest regards,

Eunice
