Following an incident resulting in an injury to my finger, I decided to go to the urgent care centre to see if it was broken due to swelling and pain etc.
On arrival to the centre I booked in with the receptionist who made me feel as if I should not have come to the minors unit. They asked me what my presenting issue was which I then explained. They then asked to see the finger and asked me to bend it.
I found this very intrusive as in my opinion they are not a clinical member of staff and I felt it was very inappropriate that they asked me clinical questions, especially in the waiting area for everyone to see.
I did show them my finger as I felt I had to in order to see a clinical member of staff- to which the receptionist replied "look you can bend it". I am a nurse myself and I would not use NHS resources if I did not feel it were necessary, which I informed them. I felt that this reception on arrival made feel unwelcome and as if I should not be using the service and again felt almost embarrassed in the waiting area- and made me feel I was wasting everyone's time.
However the clinical care from the nurse who triaged me and the dr was excellent and very efficient. They clearly genuinely cared about my wellbeing and wanting to diagnose the presenting issue. The dr informed me that I had a hairline fracture of my knuckle which concluded my assumption which I went to the minor injury unit for. I would like to thank the clinical team for seeing me so quickly and for treating me as if I should be there.
"They clearly genuinely cared about my wellbeing"
