"Discharge arrangements after nose operation"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a relative),

We arrived at Blake Ward at 8am. My sister had her operation at 11. 30am and was out by 1. 30pm. She was told she could go home later that day. She was told that she could get dressed at 3. 30pm. Junior doctor came and said she was arranging the discharge but would have to wait for the consultant to come out of surgery to authorize this. Moving on another 2 hours & 30 mins. Still no sign. Eventually after we had asked politely when he would be here and being told that, consultants are very busy, he came in at 6pm. And with the same information that his junior doctor had already given us 2 hours and 30 mins before, discharged my sister. We then had to wait a further 40 minutes for the paperwork and the two items of medication. We asked whether this was ready yet and was treated as if we were making a fuss. There was definitely an attitude with the staff, whom had earlier in the day been very nice.

We were exhausted and my sister had a fever starting and just wanted to go home.

When we finally got out of the ward and was walking passed Gould ward, my sister was approached by two of it's medical staff and asked whether she was feeling okay, as she was so hot with a fever and looked quite poorly. They were lovely and obviously could see, just by looking at her, that she was not right. We eventually got home at 9pm. We live a long way from the hospital, which is why we asked, how much longer the discharge would take.

Dear Agent Sammy

I am really sorry to hear of your experience. I hope your sister is feeling better now and please send her my apologies for the distress and discomfort she felt.

I will follow this up for you with the ward next week when I will have the opportunity to discuss this with Sister. If you would like to call me to discuss this further I can be reached on 01823 344762. Otherwise I will post again early next week

Kind regards

Laura

Dear Agent Sammy

Thank you for your patience in waiting for me to reply. I have spoken to the ward sister, Sister Milton, who has apologised for the experience you and your sister had. She explained it is normal practice for the surgeons to wait until the end of their list before coming to the ward to review their patients, as this ensures the theatre list is not delayed. Although the information you received from the consultant was the same as that provided by the junior doctor, it may have been that the consultant wanted to review your sister personally before allowing her discharge.

I am sorry that this delay plus the wait for tablets caused you and your sister to spend a longer day at the hospital than anticipated. It must have made your sister's experience more distressing with a late trip home and we are sorry for this additional discomfort.

If you have any further questions please do get in touch

Kind regards

laura.
