"Best decision of my life 18/03/2017"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I had to go to Cramlington

Hospital emergency as i was breathless for about a month and after visiting my local surgery for the last 2 weeks.

As i felt the medication was not working and thought it could be more serious than looked like i have decided to go to Cramlington hospital on a Saturday by 12,00.

After explaining my problem i was told that would not take long until someone could see me which was proved right as in 10 minutes a nurse started the assessment with blood tests, electrocardiogram , X-ray and after that was sent to a room where a consultant would see me.

Even if it took some time until they could start with me i was completely relaxed and fully understood the waiting time as the hospital is very busy and there is a sense of emergency/urgency for some patients waiting for their turn.

Consultant was amazing following all the steps in order to find the real problem and decided to keep me in the hospital for further tests.

They already had an idea and i was briefed after entering my room 24 in Respiratory ward and next day after CT Scan the results were ready after 30 minutes and another consultant informed me about the problem.

Diagnosis-Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism.

More tests were carried in order to look for more complications and another last briefing was done and a full report of my problem when discharged.

I am sure i own my life to Cramlington Hospital emergency services.

I cannot thank enough to porters, domestics, nurses, admin ,doctors etc.

This hospital with amazing professionals proved to be an example of how an emergency service should work all around the country.

Dear Antonio,

Thanks so much for this review. I see my colleague Jess replied to you on the 24th march but for some reason this hasn't come through yet to the Patient Opinion website so I'll remedy that now, if that's ok?

Your story was such a lovely tribute to the staff who cared for you and who, you believe, saved your life. Thanks for taking the time to share it - especially when you have been so ill.

The Northumbria hospital was designed to do exactly what you describe: to provide rapid access to highly specialist care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so that those people who are most seriously ill can be seen by the right team as quickly as possible and more lives can be saved.

You commented on how busy the hospital is - the largest receiving centre in the North East. We are currently making lots of changes to streamline care and protect the service for those that need it most, so that waiting times can be improved.

Your belief that the hospital is an exemplar of what emergency care medicine should be means the world to us - thank you. I'll make sure that the folk that matter have a chance to read your kind feedback.

I hope life has settled down a little for you now and that you are recovering well at home. Do take care.

with best wishes and thanks,

Annie
