"That I got the surgical care I ..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / General surgery

What I liked

That I got the surgical care I needed from the team I was cared by from the day I was admitted via casualty on 15th February 09. The consultant and his team treated me with respect as an educated person when explaining my condition and its prognosis, in a language which was down to earth, with no jargon.

What could be improved

Care from the nursing staff was very good although they were streched as they never went home at the end of the shift as they should have and it took them long to answer to the bed call. Absence of seniors/ sister (management) was painfully obvious-needs improving immediately. Psychological care i.e. stress / anxiety was absent - care assisstants were the main contact for a chat regarding issues which I consider as a main component of care. Qualified staff were never free as they were busy attending to clinical matters. I would hate to an older person in the same situation!

Anything else?

Post discharge in March 09, I had written a letter of concern about a few points and my praise for the good work the team are doing but there has been no reply to date-2nd June 09! It must have fallen on deaf ears or too busy not paying attention to the basics. I would like to know whether my letter reach to the management of the surgical team I wrote to!!!! I am a retired person from the NHS now with a professional background started my career at Medway in 1973, worked in casualty, Intensive care and surgical wards! It's hard when people in management don't listen to concerns!
