"Mixed experience in Cardiac Outpatient Visit"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I came to see a consultant. I was seen very promptly by a Healthcare Assistant who took my blood pressure. She was very polite and friendly. She then asked me to sit in the waiting room while she organised an ECG for me. In less than 5 minutes I was called in for an ECG, again technician was very professional and polite.

My only criticism for this test is that one has to strip to the waist and lay down and I felt to be offered a paper cover would have made the experience more dignified.

Once the test was completed I was returned to the waiting room to await the consultant. Again, less than 5 minutes wait and I was called by the consultant. I was able to ask questions after I had been examined and the whole experience was very reassuring. My total time in the clinic was just under half an hour. Everybody treated me with respect and kindness.

Dear JW1951,

Thank you for sharing your story about your recent visit to our cardiac outpatients department. It's great to hear how pleased you were with the way our staff interacted with you, how prompt you felt each part of your appointment was and that you left having had your questions answered and feeling reassured.

We are currently working on a project to review how we protect patients' modesty in our radiology department and I am interested to read your observations within cardiology. If you would like to meet with me to discuss this further then do please get in touch, I would be very much like to hear more about your experience.

With best wishes,

Cathy White

Dear JW1951,

I wanted to let you know that we have made a change in response to the point you raised about having something to cover you whilst having an ECG. Our staff have reflected on what you said and will now offer all their patients the choice of a gown, a disposable sheet or using an item of their own clothing whilst the ECG is being carried out.

Thank you once again for raising this issue and we a pleased to say we have made a change.

With best wishes,

Cathy White
