"I was referred to the Lymphodema ..."

About: Moseley Hall Hospital

What I liked

I was referred to the Lymphodema Clinic at Moseley Hall by my new GP. The nurse who attended me was very caring, and went to exceptional lengths to put me at my ease. Although I had been prescribed support hosiery some years earlier, I had always felt that the beneficial value was marginal. The nurse suggested a newer type of hosiery, which has proved to be much more appropriate for my on going care. My day to day life has been significantly improved by the use of the new hosiery, and (in my opinion) the condition of my legs is improving, as is my mobility. The nurse provided me with lots of background information about my condition and how to manage it. She also made suggestions about other care products that might be prescribed to further improve my condition and diminish the effect of my condition on my day to day life. I was given a full examination and detailed measurements of my legs were made to ensure the best possible fit for my new hosiery. I was treated with the utmost respect and courtesy by ALL the staff I met on the day I visited the hospital.

What could be improved

The wait for an appointment was quite lengthy following the referral from my GP. When I did receive an appointment by post, it was cancelled almost immdeiately and replaced with a later appointment. I do however appreciate that dovetailing patients requirments operational constraints will always be an issue. In my view the long wait for an appointment was more than justified by the outcome of the visit.

Anything else?

I believe that the Lymphodema Clinic and the nurse involved in my care are a valuable asset to this PCT and a credit to the NHS. I cannot speak highly enough of my nurse.

Thank you for taking time to give feedback on your experiences of the lymphodema service based at Moseley Hall Hospital. Your comments regarding the specialist nurse have been fed back to her, and she has been congratulated for the high standard of her work. I am sorry that you waited a long time after your referral to receive your appointment, which was then cancelled and rearranged for a later date. Without more information, it is not possible to explain why your appointment was cancelled, however I apologise for any inconvenience and discomfort caused by the cancellation. I would explain that first appointments are scheduled to last two hours to ensure that all aspects of health are considered, and it is therefore difficult to re-schedule quickly following any cancellation.

The NHS 18 week referral to treatment pathway ensures that all patients are seen within 18 weeks, and the lymphodema clinic is compliant with this target. Currently the waiting time for the lymphodema clinic is 8 weeks.
