"No rest at AMU"

About: Tameside General Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the unit following concerns of pain in the back of my head as something serious and needed a lumbar puncture to rule out any minor bleeding. After admitting me to the ward at 6pm I was told at 9. 30pm I was to stay over night. I was placed at the far end in bed 20 right next to the adjoining doors and where the staff duty desk was situated. I also had a main light for the ward above my bed. With the noise from patients and staff all night unbearable I was told I would be moved somewhere quiet at 2am. I waited till 5. 30am (total- 22hours without any sleep) couldn't bear any longer I had to discharge myself. The most awful experience of my life. Got home at 6am and got the sleep and rest I needed.

We are very sorry you have had cause to raise this concern regarding your recent admission to the Trust.

Unfortunately, the AMU is a busy area, accepting complex and varied emergency admissions 24 hours a day.

Owing to operational demand, we are very sorry that it was not possible to transfer you to an alternative ward at this time and you were not able to get the rest you needed.
