"Walk in Centre - Poss Dislocated rib by..."

About: Mount Vernon Hospital Site

Attended as I believed I had dislocated a rib at the top left hand side under my shoulder blade, told could not be X-Ray'd by receptionist but X-Rays are done from shoulder down the arm. Seen by nurse and told them what my symptoms were, severe pain, unable to breath properly one side due to the pain, breathless, unable to move, walk, sit and couldn't get out of bed that morning or bed over due to the sharp stabbing, burning pain in my shoulder blade.

Chest examined with a stethoscope with my polo neck jumper still on, then pushing in three or four places on the breast bone again with my jumper still on and then the three or four Cervical Vertebra by just pulling the polo neck down a few inches.

Then told my rib was not fractured, I never said or thought it was, told I had pulled a muscle and was given a leaflet for 'Chest

Injuries' that it would heal in a few weeks offered codeine which I cannot take but agreed Ibuprofen/Paracetamol.

I am gobsmacked at the lack of further investigation how can anyone make a clinical decision when no examination or assessment of the injured area took place at all, and clothing over that injured area not removed basic, basic First

Aid training tells you to do that ......very poor and shoddy nursing practice.

I left in considerable pain and discomfort that got worse, I started to feel not so good and knew I could not stay like that over the weekend, and later that day took myself to a Physio and sports injuries clinic where they kindly managed to fit me in that afternoon and with manipulation the dislocated rib at the top of the shoulder was put back into place, as a result I am more comfortable and mobile but will need another treatment this week.

Thankfully, having a little medical knowledge and the sports that I have done over the years and still do, I knew something more was wrong and did not wait for a few weeks for the so called pulled muscle to heal.

I am more then happy for this to be fed back to the nurse so that any additional training needs are met, i.e. Classic symptoms for a Dislocated Rib.

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied by your visit to the Minor Injuries Unit last week.

I have investigated your comments and will follow this up with the Emergency Nurse Practitioner concerned and ensure that she receives any additional training identified.

As is our usual practice, I will also feedback to the rest of the team, so that others may benefit.

With regards to a ‘lack of further investigation’ as Nurse Practitioners we are not authorised to request Chest Xrays, only limbs.

However, it is unlikely that such an Xray would show the dislocation/sprain and therefore would have been of little use.

I wish you all the best with your recovery.

If you wish to discuss this any further, then please do not hesitate to contact me directly in Minor Injuries.
