"It feels like there is no compassion"

About: Millbrook Mental Health Unit

(as a relative),

My relative is on orchard ward, from the very first time we walked through the door with them, it has been an absolute nightmare, their health is going down rapidly, and I am finding one contradiction after another. It seems like there is no interaction with the patients at all, unless patient approaches them, my relative wont approach them because they trust no one at the minute, they are refusing to eat, when questioned they say well they went down for dinner, but you never saw them eat it did you, or we bought a sandwich up and put it in fridge, but sandwich is still in fridge.

There do not seem to be any daily activities, not once have I witnessed any staff sitting down with a patient and drawing them into a conversation, not once have they been took outside for a walk round, unless we take them out, when asked if they could do it they say if we have time, then its never done.

Men and women sleeping within feet of each other, and my relative is having a real hard time with this due to abuse suffered in the past. We have been waiting for a month for them to be moved to nottingham, where we at least can visit them daily, so they can see a friendly face, and make sure that they eat and drink something, and get fresh air, it is literally breaking my heart seeing them go down hill rapidly in a place we thought they would get better. all we get told is that they are on the waiting list. they shouldnt be there in the first place. all you see is staff sitting away from them, doing paperwork.  It feels like there is no compassion or one to one care, and the government get the blame for cutbacks, if I mention to them can you keep an eye on them as this is how they are feeling and give them an example, the reply is sorry we didnt know that, well try asking them how they are and how they are feeling, and what can we do for you today, would be a start.

Dear Heartbroken2

I am sorry that you havent been in touch regarding your recent experience of your relative on Orchid ward

I would like to update you that we have recently made some changes to the system of ensuring patients are moved to their locality as soon as practically possible and have communicated this to our bed management team to ensure any waiting list is fair and on a needs led basis with senior management in full support of this

I am unable to comment specifically regarding your relatives care during this posting but I would again like to further offer the opportunity to speak with me via telephone or email if you prefer to discuss your concerns and of our recent changes

I look forward to speaking with you

Kindest Regards
