"Pain Management shocking"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / General medicine

(as a relative),

A surgical pre admission Ward at NUH Trust Ward C31 where my relative was in pain for unreasonable lengths of time as the staff on the Ward could not cannulate! Senior staff 'unable' to do it.....please tell me why patients have to put up with such poor basic care? Yes- you are busy, yes- the Ward is clean, yes- many staff appear kind and caring. It REALLY.......we could be in severe pain at home! How is this allowed to happen please?

Thank you for getting in touch. I’m sorry to hear your relative was in so much pain and that you’re unhappy with the level of care provided on the ward. I’d be happy to discuss these concerns either directly with your relative or, with your relative’s consent, with you directly. If you would like to contact me you can reach me on 0115 9249924 ext. 68451 or Rekhaben.Patel@nuh.nhs.uk.

Kind regards,

Rekhaben Patel.

Matron, Surgical Division.

Thank you for your email, I would be delighted to call you to discuss my concerns directly. I believe that by doing so I can highlight the specific concerns in more detail. As a Trust I hope you will be able to address this matter and ensure that your patients are better cared for and are not left in pain as your Ward staff cannot cannulate. The fact that you have surgical doctors on call does not help when they are in the operating theatre. I was advised that your staff cannot contact hospital at night - why is this? What would happen if a patient arrested and had no line in? How is that situation managed effectively? I would like to know why Ward C31 and C32 cannot access this service? It was 4hrs before a member of staff inserted the cannula- I believe this was done by a doctor. It was after visiting hours therefore I was not personally present when this happened.

I have tried calling today but there was no response. I will try again. Many Thanks
