"A&E and Oak (Children's) Ward"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital (Taunton)

(as a parent/guardian),

My 8 year old was blue-lighted to MPH early on Sunday morning. She was seen in A&E by an amazing consultant called Alistair who was very friendly and reassuring to us all including my 6 year old son. The nurse on A&E (Teresa? ) gave my daughter a teddy to help keep her calm and look after her and distracted her by looking at her Where's Wally book (which the receptionist gave to my son to help while doctors were looking after his sister.

My daughter was admitted to Oak Ward and was very scared. Staff Nurse Sarah & Student Beth were so warm and caring. They looked after us all and made a planned overnight stay sound quite pleasant with tales of visits from the resident guinea pigs the next morning. The patience and understanding was exemplary. They gave stickers for bravery and cheered us all along through medication and canulas etc. I cannot think how the treatment could be improved- other than having a parent toilet on Oak Ward rather than having to go to Acorn as my daughter was not happy to be left when I needed the toilet.

Dear Lollysmummy,

I am so sorry to read that your daughter was admitted to hospital. I am very pleased however to read that she was so well cared for both in the Accident & Emergency Department and on Oak Ward. It is wonderful to know that your daughter, together with you and your son, were well supported by staff at such a difficult time. I will be very happy to share your comments with the staff in both departments who really appreciate feedback from patients and relatives.

I am sorry that your daughter was unhappy when you had to leave her side to use the toilet facilities on Acorn Ward. I have spoken to a Ward Sister who explained that currently there is not space to have a toilet on Oak Ward itself but she will pass your comments on to the ward manager. I do hope this finds your daughter making a good recovery and thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

It sounds like your daughter was very brave indeed and well deserved her bravery stickers.

With best wishes, Lucille
