A dear friend of mine is currently being treated for rectal cancer and was admitted on to E3 after being placed in E1. After moving to this ward, she found the nursing staff and junior doctors out of their depth and extremely unhelpful and showed a lack of both dignity and care to her despite being in a lot of pain. Whilst on the ward we witnessed other patients waiting an inordinate amount of time for nurses to answer their emergency bells and would be left waiting to use the toilet/bed pan for over an hour or to be given their necessary painkillers. When communicating with the nursing staff, we were met with shrugs and a bad attitude. My friend is an intelligent woman who luckily had an advocate with her - however, despite this she was shown very little care and consideration despite her circumstances. Her drugs were administered much later than the allocated time which increased her difficulties to an unbearable level. This simply must not be allowed to continue.
