"The people working on 6 North ..."

About: Charing Cross Hospital

What I liked

The people working on 6 North were very friendly and I generally received excellent care.

What could be improved

Cleaning problems. I was in a side room as they thought I might have C diff. The bathroom was dirty and for the first few days it was not cleaned at all. I had to ask. The cleaner, who was really sweet, hardly spoke a word of english, and clearly didn't understand the instructions he was given. It was left to me to ask him on a daily basis to clean my room.

The food was awful. I had previously been an inpatient in February, when the food was absolutely first class for hospital cuisine. But by August they had changed caterers, and catering had really gone downhill. Had to get my husband to bring me food.

There was an unacceptable delay in diagnosing whether or not I had C diff. A sample was given on two successive days but not sent off; then came a weekend, so I was in for 5 nights before the all clear. Meanwhile I was pumped full of anti-biotics which prolonged my symptoms, and meant I was an inpatient for 11 days.

Anything else?

I am also a long-term patient of Clinic 8 and until a few months ago, the Chemotherapy unit on 6 East. On each and every occasion I have had long waits for consultation/treatment. A typical day would be 3 hours in the clinic, and a further 2 hours wait on 6 East. I just wish there were some way of improving on this, especially as the waiting room environment in each area is fairly grim, especially 6 East.
