"I am getting the care that I need here"

About: Medium Secure Division / Robinson

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I am getting the care that I need here. I have only been in this hospital for five months and came here from another hospital. It is alright here and I think that I will be moving on soon because I am not allowed out here. I don't know when I will move on because I am waiting for my tribunal and have to see what they say. The staff here have been ok and have been supportive even when I have argued with them. They try an calm me down and I have done really well. They have asked my opinion and ask me about my care plans and what I would like. I explain to them what I would like but I have never seen anything and this suits me because I would rather not have copies in my room. I spend my days playing games, going to education sessions and OT sessions. I am happy with the level of sessions I am doing. I think it would be nice if staff could do more with us but there are not enough staff to do this as the staff have to be with the patients who need special attention. At my other place these patients get other allocated staff who were not in the numbers, so this stopped diverting staff.

I get on well with the other patients, there are times when there are arguments with one particular person, but these are minor and I knew them before I came here so we always sort things out. You can't always get on with other people all the time. As I said, I feel I am getting the help I need here and I would like to do some patient experience work, as I did this before at my other place. I used to talk to staff on induction. I also would like to study hairdressing, I did it at college and want to start this up again but I don't know how to go about it. I have asked the OT staff how I can start again but they are not sure how I can do it.

Thank you for sharing you views. Unfortunately there will always be certain patients that require more support at times and this can feel unfair to those who are at a different stage of their journey through hospital. What we do provide is an activity co-ordinator who’s role is specifically to provide leisure and fun based activity to balance therapy. The nursing staff also attempt to facilitate additional activities through the week and weekend including ward based parties, social groups and IT access to the ward PC.

We have managed to support a patient on Robinson to undertake a vocational role with the WWH hairdressers. Unfortunately the patient wasn’t able to sustain the employment but if this is something you would like to explore with the team on Robinson, please identify this with your care co-ordinator.
