"I'm devastated by my treatment"

About: St Peter's Hospital / Neurology

(as the patient),

After suffering for over 6 years with my disabling condition, I finally got an appointment to see a neurologist. When I was called by the Dr I felt I was spoken down too, felt very insecure and couldn't get a word in edge ways. I had a letter telling me I would be asked about my past, ailments, and the appointment will be approx half an hour at least. I was in there for 7 minutes. Being told I don't have M. S from the Dr doing reflex checks. They never asked about my cognitive side, what I go through daily, anything. The only thing they asked was why do you think your doctor sent you here. Basically I felt as if they thought I was putting it on and made a diagnosis by looking at me. I could not understand half of what they were saying due to my cognitive problems. I think they just wanted me out the door asap and that they clearly felt they were wasting their time with me. I was supposed to have an MRI. At one point I said, I'm very bad when I'm in relapse, in shock they raised their voice accusingly said, where did you hear that word from, why would you use that word! ! Due to feeling already so demoralized, I said... I'm not an uneducated person! ! They then said well we only use that word in M. S... I found this ignorant... As the word relapse is also used in mental health and alcoholics amongst many other things... I feel absolutely disgusted and devastated as a former NHS staff member.

We are very sorry to hear about your experience at your appointment and that you felt the doctor did not listen to you or give you the opportunity to discuss your concerns fully. We would very much like the chance to discuss this with your further, so we can identify the member of staff involved. We would also like to see if there is a way we could help - perhaps by arranging another appointment with a different doctor? Please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01932 723553 if you would be willing to pursue this further.
