"NHS waiting list for orthopaedic hip surgery"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Outpatients

(as a relative),

My husband was added to the list for hip surgery in November. He received a letter guaranteeing surgery within 12 weeks or earlier but no later than February. We are still waiting, having received no information. His pain is now chronic. He has two crutches and is immobile and housebound. I have contacted the NHS with no success. They tell me it could be June. This is ludicrous. He will be bedridden by then. It feels like the NHS list takes no account of need or urgency or chronic circumstances. It is a total disaster in my opinion.

Hi Angered

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion. I am sorry to read about the delay your husband is experiencing for hip surgery and the pain that he is now in. I am aware that Orthopaedics are currently unable to meet the treatment time guarantee due to demands on the service.

I will share your post with the General Manager for Orthopaedics and ask that they respond to what you have raised here.

Best wishes
Lisa

Dear Angered

Clearly, your husband's treatment schedule has been subject to delay and I would like to offer my unreserved apology that this has been the case and for the added anxiety that this will be causing.

Unfortunately, due to demands on the service, we are unable to offer you a date for surgery at this time. Please be assured staff continue to work to arrange additional activity to accommodate patients who have been delayed.

As soon as we are able to confirm a date for surgery, staff will be in touch with your husband.

Kind regards
Susan Groom
General Manager, Surgery, South Sector

Update posted by Angered (a relative)

My husband is totally incapacitated and in chronic pain and his situation is urgent. The decline in is condition is horrific. A caring health service should be able to take this into consideration and prioritise his surgery. My husbands quality of life has been affected while he waits for surgery. I think the way the list is managed is extremely poor. A review of current practice is necessary in order meet the needs of the patients it serves.
