"The care my daughter and I received after birth"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Neonatal Unit (Special Care Baby Unit)

(as the patient),

I went into labour 3 weeks early. After some time at home we called the maternity hospital in Aberdeen and they advised us to come in, which we did. Whilst there my waters broke however after deciding to have morphine my contractions stopped and I was sent home. My contractions started again the next day and we headed back to the midwife led unit in Aberdeen. My contractions were getting stronger however I was still only 4cm dilated so I had asked if I could use the birthing pool. As the midwife was getting it ready, my fiancé noticed that my hands and feet had turned very blue and I was complaining about being very cold and I was uncontrollably shivering. He called the midwife back through and she immediately called the doctor and tried to cool me down. My temperature was well above 40. I don't remember any of this but I am so grateful to say my daughter was in my arms within half an hour through c-section.

My daughter and I were kept in for 9 days, my tests came back saying that I had streptococcal pneumonia and My daughter was kept in neo natal for tests (thankfully all came back clear) for 4 days before coming up to the ward with me. Staff were amazing, taking care of us both so well. I received so much support to breast feed and always made to feel like a hero even if I had only managed to express around 3mls of milk at a time for the first 5 days. Which looked a bit pathetic in the fridge next to bottles with over 200mls. But by the end of the 9days, I was 'that' mum producing 1-2bottles at a time.

I will always be grateful to the hard working staff at Aberdeen maternity hospital for their caring, up-beat yet sympathetic manor. Although my birth story scared me it's nothing to what a couple of my friends have gone through and I'm amazed by their stories and what an amazing job the team there do.

Dear Summergirl27

Many thanks for taking the time to send us your feedback when you must be very busy with your daughter. It is always scary when things seem to go wrong in labour (or any other time) but it is good to hear that the team reacted quickly and managed your care well. You must have been so worried after your daughter was born and it is excellent to hear how the care you received made such a difference. You should rightly feel very proud of yourself managing to express successfully - well done.

I hope that you and your daughter are both doing well now and getting on well at home

Jenny
