On a Sunday, last November, my mother, who was suffering from bladder cancer and lymphedema, was feeling uncharacteristically sleepy and unwell. I called the 111 service for advice, after going through all the details they thought it be best for paramedics to attend.
10 minutes later the ambulance arrived with two crew members, Alistair and Keith, who were just fantastic. They examined my mum, gave her paracetamol and put her on a drip, they bantered with her, and me, and really lifted our spirits. My mum perked up with all this attention and the effects of the drip, this was lovely to see and a relief.
My mum’s leg was rather red, the paramedics suspected septicemia and advised us that they would need to take my mum to the hospital so that she could be treated with antibiotics.
At the Cheltenham General in the A&E unit the paramedics left us to answer another call. However, when they returned they found us and checked my mum was okay. I cannot thank them enough for their care and good humour.
My mum was later admitted to hospital where the care given was, again, absolutely brilliant. The nurses and consultants who looked after my mum from the cancer diagnosis to her passing away were fantastic.
On this occasion, they did not hesitate to give my mother a blood transfusion to strengthen her while they considered other treatment options. I was touched by this, even though I know they are not at all discriminatory in giving treatment, I still felt very grateful.
"Fantastic care and staff"
