"My mother immediately burst into tears of joy that lasted several minutes."

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

Hi,

I always believe in credit where it is due. I'll try to keep this as short as possible.

My mother has suffered from ear problems since pre-school. She is now in her seventies and has for most of her life had NHS hearing aids. Last year her hearing deteriorated to the point that after several check ups at LCH she went to Specsavers and spent nearly £2000 on one of their state-of-art models. It was no better (in fact worse) and she got her money back.

Since then she has reverted to the NHS model but her life has been hell. She got quite depressed about it as she succumbed to the fact that she was never going to hear again - she was practically stone cold deaf.

Strange though - I came to realise that every time I spoke to her on her mobile she was fine. I even rang her once from her settee (3 feet away) so we could have a conversation.

I persuaded her to go back to her GP with me and we would try to find out what her options were. The GP sent her to the audiologist at clinic 6 for assessment. This was last Saturday 4th Feb 2017 at 11: 30am.

I think the lady's name was Diane. What a star! Professional, sympathetic, courteous and polite. Despite only being given the time to do an assessment she clearly understood my mother's situation. The tests proved that her hearing hadn't deteriorated significantly and concurred that it could be the equipment at fault. She replaced the old equipment with a new unit (new supplier) and reprogrammed following the assessment.

When she finally turned on the new hearing aids my mother immediately burst into tears (tears of joy) that lasted several minutes.

What a difference - she even commented when I got her home that she could hear the clock ticking on the wall. She's never heard that - ever.

Please extend mine, my mother's and my families gratitude and thanks for what she has done. It would have been too easy (as she was running out of time for an assessment only appointment) to let us go away in the belief that nothing more could be done - only hope I haven't got her in trouble by relating this.
