My mother-in-law, who was 91 last September, was discharged into my wife's and my care in our home in Falkirk, having at that time suffered one clinically assessed stroke, followed by 9 stroke/TIA's over the ensuing 12 months. She lived alone in her own home and had 2 care visits per day but was assessed as not being capable of independent living. When we asked what alternatives would be available, the discharging doctor, who I am not happy to name here, suggested she could be accommodated in our garage, or else be transferred to Falkirk Community Hospital whilst awaiting a Care Home placement that could take up to 18 months. We simply and morally could not allow any of those options to happen and so, we converted one of our bedrooms into a granny flat and she now lives with us, permanently. Whilst we love her dearly, we now feel that we were cornered into making a prompt decision that is beginning to have a dramatic impact on our own lives, me being 70 with multiple health issues, and my wife being 67 with severe arthritis problems, joint replacements, and Registered Disabled, and no alternative family supports in Scotland. She has since suffered a further 5 vascular dementia related strokes/TIA's, most recently today, making 15 in total, and whilst she and we do not relish the thought of her living the rest of her life in a care home given she has always been a fiercely independent lady, my wife and I feel very strongly that no consideration at all was given by the discharging doctor to the ramifications of us becoming my mother-in-law's lifetime CARERS. But whilst acknowledging that the discharging doctor was clearly concerned about my mother-in-law's health, we cannot but feel that they were equally motivated by emptying her bed for the next in line patient in an ever increasing queue.
