"Focused on the discharge mantra!"

About: Southmead Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

A relative had a reversal of colostomy plus other stuff on Monday. He was told that he would be going home on same day 1630. Came out of Op (approx 3 to 4 hrs) by 3pm, Nursing staff still saying you will be going home today.

I visited, he was in terrible pain and unable to pass urine. later on he needed to be catheterised. The constant mantra, you are going home continued. He was very uncomfortable, swollen abdomen and growing, feeling very sick, unable to go to the toilet! He was very firm with staff saying I cant go home as very sick, some were firm back saying you will go home The mantra continued. At last! on Friday agreement that he has an ileus!

Dear Elizabethe – I was sorry to learn of your friend’s experience and for any distress or anxiety caused by the focus on discharging them. As you may be aware the demands on the resources of the NHS are acute at the moment and so it is true that there is a focus on discharge. However, this must always be safe and well planned and implemented. Clearly in this instance staff were not sensitive to your friend’s level of pain and his condition and I wish to extend my apologies on behalf of the clinical teams that the appropriate reassurance was not given. Please pass on my regrets to your friend and my best wishes for a speedy recovery from his ileus.

I have passed your comments on to the departments concerned so they will be aware of your feedback.

Kind regards – Steve Sykes
