"The excellent care for the past 5 years"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Child and Family Mental Health Services Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Physiotherapy Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Speech and Language Therapy (Speech Therapy)

(as a parent/guardian),

I never write reviews really but in this instance I will make an exception. I apologise for going beyond the 3 years as suggested but I wish to tell the whole story. It starts in May 2012, my wife went into labour and as planned we headed to Aboyne maternity unit, where despite the excellent care, baby was refusing to come out and we would be transferred to Aberdeen maternity unit.

I was half glad as I knew they would have more specialists, more equipment should something go wrong; but also a little disappointed as I had heard negative things in the past. (Mainly from the evening express to be honest).Well to say my fears were unfounded was an understatement. From the moment we arrived we were treated like we were the most important people in the entire hospital, I mean all aspects of our care was excellent; especially communication. I mention communication in particular because when our son did eventually arrive in the world via forceps it soon became clear he had Down's Syndrome. A complete surprise and at the time were extremely upset. However the cogs of the incredible health system we have had already started turning, within a very short space of time a paediatrician arrived and explained everything to us. No negativity, just realistic facts. This helped immensely and the shock is soon replaced with unimaginable love.

But the whole way the care our son and us, his parents, have received has been incredible, so many specialists checking on every aspect of his health, from Dr Charlton, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, Cardiologists, the entire ENT team who routinely check his hearing and supply his hearing aids.

The Drs and Nurses in the surgical ward when our son had his Tonsils removed. All this care, and what does it cost? Nothing. He will be 5 in  May and now has two sisters. Again the level of care was simply superb. All this and not once have we had any cause to complain. I can't name another organisation who could possibly compete with that.

Anyway apologies about the length of the story but from the bottom of our hearts a massive thank you.

Dear Pd22

Thank you so much for your feedback. It is lovely to hear what a difference the care provided to your wife, yourself and your son has meant to you all as a family. As you say, communication is so important and can make a huge difference and information helps reduce anxieties quickly.

I will make sure that your feedback is shared with all the teams that you have mentioned - Dr Charlton and the rest of teams will be delighted to receive this. All best wishes to you and your family
