"General surgery feedback"

About: Rotherham Hospital / General surgery

I was admitted to RDGH just under a year ago for a simple hernia repair. I developed a haematoma immediately on discharge and ended up being readmitted. I was informed by a junior doctor that there was no way the haematoma would subside spontaneously and I needed to go back to theatre. I was starved overnight, given morphine even though it states on my notes and not to, and then seen by the registrar who in the winter when I decided I didn't need further surgery and was discharged home. I was seen by the surgeon who performed the operation on day six postop and the didn't really pass comment probably protecting the integrity and reputation of both the registrar and the hospital. I had my sutures removed the following day and the day after that won't burst open. Thus began five weeks of daily dressings and two courses of antibiotics for wound infections. The situation has been made much worse as a result of the hospital denying any responsibility. They cited the fact that I had signed a consent form

I was well aware of the risks. This may be accurate in relation to the original operation but I was not complaining about that this just the after-care offered me on my second admission. I went through the complaint process including meeting a chief of surgery who deliberately misquoted European guidelines on the treatment of post inguinal hernia Haematoma and subsequently the medical director. Whilst during the meeting the medical director appear to agree that the junior doctor may have been right in their recommendation for further and the registrar had made an incorrect decision, when it came to the final response they retracted this citing lack of evidence in the notes. The member of staff doesn't seem to understand that the lack of evidence was down to poor recordkeeping on behalf of those involved. This case is currently with the ombudsman perhaps they can untangle the duplicitous of all those involved. I am currently experiencing severe chronic groin pain and facing the prospect of further surgery. I really do hope that RDGH do you not think that this is the end of the matter, because it certainly is not.
