My daughter had surgery on her elbow at Crosshouse hospital. The staff were lovely however I was shocked that her anaesthetic was not given until we were in the actual theatre, she was extremely upset and frightened, I think it is far too traumatic to expect a child to walk into an operating theatre.
It took 4 attempts to insert iv which made matters even worse. Once we got her home, the pain relief was not keeping her comfortable, 24 hours after surgery we ended up back at hospital where they removed her theatre bandage which was applied too tight and was the reason her wound was so painful.
It also became apparent that they had dispensed meds based on her age and not her height and weight, she should have been on twice the amount of ibuprofen.
I am a huge supporter of our NHS and how fantastic the staff are given the circumstances, but as a parent of a child who is left terrified of hospital now and was in unnecessary pain, I can't help but feel disgruntled.
