"I can't help but feel disgruntled"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Paediatric Surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter had surgery on her elbow at Crosshouse hospital. The staff were lovely however I was shocked that her anaesthetic was not given until we were in the actual theatre, she was extremely upset and frightened, I think it is far too traumatic to expect a child to walk into an operating theatre.

It took 4 attempts to insert iv which made matters even worse. Once we got her home, the pain relief was not keeping her comfortable, 24 hours after surgery we ended up back at hospital where they removed her theatre bandage which was applied too tight and was the reason her wound was so painful.

It also became apparent that they had dispensed meds based on her age and not her height and weight, she should have been on twice the amount of ibuprofen.

I am a huge supporter of our NHS and how fantastic the staff are given the circumstances, but as a parent of a child who is left terrified of hospital now and was in unnecessary pain, I can't help but feel disgruntled.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Mamma678,

I am really sorry your daughter did not have a smooth, pain free 'journey' after her recent operations. It is very disappointing to hear your daughter's pain was not controlled and you had to come back for help, we don't want anyone experiencing unnecessary pain.

I can understand why you feel disgruntled with your visit and I hope I can encourage you to contact me and with details so we can look into the specifics of your daughters' care and see what we can learn from this.

My email is Eunice.Goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or you can call me on 01563 826222.

I hope your daughter is recovering well and she is no longer in pain.

best wishes,

Eunice
