I'm a volunteer driver form Billingshurst.
I've been taking the elderly wife of a slightly older gent (of 90 years) who was discharged from St Richard's Hospital after an operation.
I cannot fault any aspect of the Bailey Unit, which is well staffed by an appropriate team of RGNs and HCAs, and who are well led by the Sister (who I insist on calling Matron, as they are the nurse in charge).
The nurse staffing problems that caused the unit to be closed last year have obviously been solved.
The whole place is always spotless, and the cleaners appear very keen to do the job properly, and to their high standards.
The staff are always willing to talk to me, even when they are attending to paper work, and even though I'm only a driver. The standards being maintained here are as good as if not better than other community hospitals I've visited over the years.
In my view the service being provide is doing exactly what it says on the tin: rehab/step down/intermediate care, or whatever the current expression is.
Community Hospitals of this excellence are such a useful part of the NHS that they should never be under threat of closure.
There is no such threat now, at least for Midhurst, as the recruitment drive last year was so successful.
One of the many issues facing the NHS is delayed discharge from acute to community hospitals. Midhurst demonstrates how that can be made to work well, and their should be more places like here.
"from a driver's perspective, this is a great..."
