"Mixed emotions at Ayr Hospital"

About: University Hospital Ayr / General Surgery

(as the patient),

During my stay at Ayr hospital I have mixed emotions. Very few of the nurses I encountered were happy and caring and willing to assist and communicated with me well. I found a lot of the nursing staff to seem quite annoyed when I asked for anything and the lack of communication regarding my care and EDD and ongoing treatment put me in a positon where I had to keep asking questions all the time. Hand hygiene was something a saw very little or not at all. Gloves wore sparingly and aprons hardly insight. No offer of my relatives comfy seat in sitting room while they waited hours on my surgery and no information of there being hot food available for them in the canteen.

Having to wait over 6 hours with no explaination why I was waiting or what was happen in regards to pain medication. Even with the one or two nursing staff going out their way, in my opinion, the majority and some constant offenders, my stay was horrible. And stressful and did not aid my recovery.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear 1week,

This is certainly not what we want for people and their family and I would like to apologise unreservedly. I am so sorry you felt your stay was 'horrible' and feeling this way, I am sure would not help you to recover.

We are keen to know more about your stay so we can look into it. Would you be prepared to contact me so we can and learn from your experience?

I can be contacted by email - eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk and by phone on 01563 826222.

Thank you for raising these issues with us and giving us a chance to address them.

I do hope you are now at home, resting and recovering well.

Kind regards,

Eunice
