Had been north looking after my 92 year old mum who had recently undergone a colostomy for bowel cancer. Felt very tired and out of sorts and this didn't improve when I eventually returned home. When I started losing weight, unable to eat and turning yellow, I went to see my GP who arranged for a blood test. That same evening I received a call from a wonderful doctor at the Badger centre in Birmingham to say that my liver levels had risen from 12 to 1100 and would I go immediately to see him. This was midnight. He advised me to see my GP the following day for an urgent MRI scan on my liver, which I did. Unfortunately my own GP was sick and the doctor I explained the situation to decided that I should attend the jaundice clinic instead. I had a two week wait but eventually saw the most brilliant, amazing, dedicated consultant at Heartlands hospital who carried out loads and loads of blood tests to determine what was wrong. Several months later and following a liver biopsy he finally confirmed AIH and devised a programme of care for me. Without his thoroughness, care and dedication I don't think I would have made it. My liver was failing. He went the extra mile to save my life and I will be forever grateful to him. I hope he knows what an amazing consultant he is and how lucky I feel to have been sent to him for treatment. If only all doctors and consultants showed such dedication and genuine care. My own GP is the same. How lucky am I? !
