"Now I cannot feed my baby how I wanted to"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

I recently gave birth in Wishaw general hospital, after my water broke I called triage who were very supportive and gave me advice on what to do, when I arrived at the hospital the care was also good, the Midwife Joanne was amazing throughout my full labour and couldn't do enough for myself and my partner however after I gave birth I had asked on numerous occasions for support on how to breastfeed my baby I was told someone would be along to help me, I was very passionate about this and the benefits for my baby I had said this straight after birth and this was also in my birthing notes.

I gave birth to my little boy at 10. 50am and still at 17. 20 I still didn't have any support as a new mum I was getting worried as my baby had no food for all that time, a family member went to speak to the midwife in charge and said I was concerned and asked when someone would be along to help the midwife replied it was "no biggy". At 18. 30 I asked a midwife for a bottle as I was getting so concerned she was very abrupt and said "are you just giving up". I was left in the labour room from 10. 50-19. 30 with dirty sheets and no care or support from anyone. I was moved into the ward at 19. 30 again no one came to support or see if I needed anything. I had to get up in the middle of the night and go and ask for a bottle for my baby and was told to help my self. The care I received was appalling! I feel so let down by the hospital as I now cannot feed my baby the way I wanted.

Dear Cazza89,

Thank you for contacting us and congratulations on the birth of your son. From the information you have provided I am delighted to hear you were well supported when contacting Triage and again throughout your labour experience by Midwife Joanne, I shall feedback to all staff involved and I know they will be grateful you have taken the time to inform us of this. However, I would like to apologise on behalf of Women’s Services and I am extremely concerned that you never received the expected care or support required after the birth of your son.

I am sorry this was your experience; this is not the usual standard of postnatal care we would expect and are disappointed you felt let down, even though you tried to ask for help and had also completed your birth plan. With regards to feeding, new born babies are often sleepy and don’t feed well in the hours and days after birth as they are recovering too, as long as they are healthy and warm we don’t worry about this. I apologise if this wasn’t explained to you properly and made you feel anxious. I am also very sorry that you didn’t get help when you asked for it, all staff in maternity are trained to offer support with breastfeeding and bottle feeding to all mothers so we can only apologise that this didn’t happen.

To really understand and explain properly what happened it would be really useful to discuss further with you and go over the events together. I would be grateful if you could contact me on Tel: 01698 366354 when convenient to you.

Kindest Regards

Wendy

Update posted by Cazza89 (the patient)

I was told to get in contact to discuss my issues, I called twice to discuss this and was told the member of staff was on annual leave and to make contact again the following week which I did to be told they were in a meeting to leave my details and they would get back to me again I have had no response! I gave birth in January and still haven't received any explanation as to why my care was so appalling!
