I took my son to the hospital after having called the 111 service (my GP was closed) and for he had been having very high temperature and frequent coughing the day/night before. 40 min after his appointment was due he was visited, quite thoroughly I should say, by a doctor and sent home with the disagnosis of a virus infection and recommendation of using Calpol/Nurofen+plenty of water to keep temperature down. At home he continued to have very high temperaure (>39 degC) during that day and at 9 PM we ended up calling 999 after he had fever convulsions which caused him to loose consiousness. At the A&E he was left on a bed for over 4 hours in a fairly cold room prior to being visited by a doctor and again, he was finally dismissed with the diagnosis of a virus infection and no prescription apart from Calpol&water. We spent the whole Sunday with him, almost naked, under constant Calpol, Nurofen and wetting his front in an attempt to keep the temperature down (despite all this, the temperature was constantly around 39 deg C). On Monday we finally called our GP who visited him in the morning and prescribed him antibiotics, already on Monday evening the temperature dropped below 39 deg C and by Tuesday morning the temperature was almost gone as he started feeling much better. My son is underweight and 3 days of very high fever were to him a severe stress. I feel the standard of service we were given was poor and I also feel NHS services in general are too cautious in giving antibiotics resulting, as mentioned in an article on the BBC in these days, in making people sick (or worse) rather than the opposite as they are meant to. I've written this merely for giving you a feedback aimed at improving the service. Thanks for the attention.
