"Ultrasound sensitivity"

About: Ipswich Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Went for my second scan as I was spotting slightly at the very start of my pregnancy. When I had my first scan I was roughly 6 weeks they could see the sac but not anything else so I had blood tests to check my hormone level was rising which it was so I was very happy and reassured also my spotting stopped which also made me feel less wary and could relax into the pregnancy.

I then went for the this second scan. There was two people doing it im assuming one was a student they were clicking away and enlarging a image on the scan and saving it but saying nothing. I could clearly tell something was wrong so I said "is it still too early? " All I got back was I can't detect a heartbeat.

The person behind said yes definitely nothing. Which was very cruel considering I'm sitting there expecting to see my child. No I'm sorry we can't detect it or any type of sensitivity.

They then handed me some blue roll told me to clean up and wait in a side room. Having been told the life you thought you was carrying for ten weeks is not alive you really just want to go home.

I saw 3 different people none of them apologised for my loss just went about telling me that I have a suspected molar pregnancy and they need to operate to evacuate the rest of the pregnancy. I can't fault the theatre staff or recovery staff they were very kind and comforting to what I was going through.

The staff after my initial scan really need some sensitivity training I now understand through my research of molar pregnancies that you don't consider it a loss as it would have died at conception or soon afterwards. My body didn't know that neither did my mind or heart. Please be more aware of how women feel after having a scan and finding that out not everything has to be medical and clinical when it's people's lives.
