"Not a bad Experience"

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology

Appointments leading up to my operation were all done in a very professional manner. When I had appt to see my consultant, they were running very late, never introduced them self to myself & my husband. Before we had even sat down they were talking away & we had difficulty understanding what they were saying, never gave us a chance to ask any questions. I had to ask if I could continue on the meds as they made a great difference to how I was feeling but needed a letter to go to GP, I should not have had to ask. Came away pretty unhappy. Pre-op appt was done in a very friendly & professional way. Have to say did not have to wait long for a date for surgery approx 4-5 weeks. On the day of operation - abdominal hysterectomy had to be in at 7.30am, no beds so taken to a room which had chairs & beds in it, with two other women waiting. Eventually 2hrs later called through by anesthetist went through everything thoroughly in an office. Doctor came in & checked what I was having done but this was done just behind a curtain in waiting area, no privacy. Eventually got called by check in nurse who did my obs but still no beds & this was 10.40am, luckily 15mins later they had a bed. Next thing I know nurse comes in & says that theatre are waiting for me. Fantastic staff in the anesthetic room, talked me through everything. Next thing I remember is waking back on ward. Left suffering in a lot of pain to point I was in tears. One of my fellow patients had to call the nurse for me as buzzer was out of my reach, even then no-one came by this time I was in agony. Eventually a nurse came asked what was wrong then went away, took ages to come back with pain relief. Nurses were lovely, a few were not exactly sympathetic or caring like they should be, obviously they were very busy, but I should not have been left suffering. Had more care from the brilliant health care assistants. My issues are no-one checked whether I was eating & drinking - which I wasn't due to nausea, leaving me severely dehydrated, luckily I got help before I was sick, a HCA was able to get me a bowl, as I had buzzed again it was ignored. My sick bowl was sitting on the side for a whole day which is unacceptable. I was told I could go home on the Thursday as long as blood results were ok, sister came & told me I had severe iron deficiency. Discharging me was a bit premature I wasn't eating & barely drinking, being sick & with the severe iron deficiency was not at all well. Obviously needed the bed. Worryingly I had to have my GP a few days later due to sickness & not eating & barely drinking. Overall not a bad experience.
