C.P.A. meeting ?

I have been suffering with mental health problems for over the past 6 years, and have been under the care of the C.M.H.T.

Last month I was asked if I would attend a C.P.A. meeting (date to be finalised), i felt flattered that i was going to be included in a meeting concerning my care, as I've never been included before, they also stated that they were going to include my G.P. who is very happy to attend.

I asked what exactly was a C.P.A meeting and was given a vague reply, I asked what would be discussed, as i didn't know what to expect. My care co ordinator made out that it was no big deal, "just a meeting, nothing special".

But this is a big deal..It's the first time that ive ever been asked to be involved in my care. Surely these meetings are for patients to be included in their own care....why wasn't i asked before?

CPA stands for Care Programme Approach which is a framework that mental health services use to support effective care for people with severe mental health problems. The CPA should put the individual at the centre of their care & promote recovery.

There are four key stages to the CPA, these are assessment of an individual's health & social needs, planning of care to meet those identified needs, implementation of the plan of care and review to determine how successful the plan has been. The review is often referred to as CPA review and it is essential that you, as the service user are part of this process. Everyone involved in your care & treatment including any informal carers should be invited to contribute to the review process so that decisions can be made about future actions. We are both surprised and sorry to hear that you do not feel that this has been happening for you and we are currently reinforcing the importance of the CPA across the Trust. We appreciate that being at the centre of a meeting can be a little daunting. We would require your care co-ordinator to recognise this and be supportive to enable you to get the best out of your meeting.
