"recent colonoscopy"

About: Heartlands Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

After my doctor decided to send me for this procedure, to check on the possibility of cancer being the cause of diarrhoea over several months, I had a pre-op appointment within days and having turned down one hospital appointment because of family commitments I was called within 19 days of seeing my doctor.

The whole procedure went very well; I had a relaxant and felt nothing. When asked to turn on my back, having been on my side with my eyes shut, I opened my eyes and saw the doctor standing on my right facing the large screen with the changing picture of my colon. I watched, fascinated to see the inside of my colon, and it was a great experience.

I recovered quickly, was soon sitting up enjoying a cup of tea, sandwich and biscuits.

Overall a very good experience. And no cancer was found - but some diverticula, so I've had prior warning and have decided not to eat seeds any more.

Dear Jenc

Thank you so much for your kind comments about your colonoscopy procedure carried out at Heartlands Hospital.

I am so pleased to note that following your referral, you were contacted to arrange your pre-operative assessment speedily, and your procedure was booked and carried out following this.

I'm sure it was a relief that the relaxant worked well, and the procedure was soon completed. It certainly sounds like you had some interesting viewing on the large screen, and I'm glad that you found it fascinating, I would imagine it would be a good way to be distracted from tha actual procedure!

I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide your overall feedback, as it will also help to reassure other patients who may require this investigation, but are feeling apprehensive. I'm sure it was great assurance to be advised that there was no evidence of cancer, and to be given the advice about some divertcula so you can make some dietary changes to consider this.

I will ensure that your feedback is highlighted to the Endoscopy Unit Manager, as well as the Matron, and also the Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology who will all share your post with all of their team who work very hard to provide a positive patient experience.

I hope my actions are acceptable and please accept my best wishes.

Kind regards

Marie Helebert
