"Puzzled by my care"

About: Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

I was treated for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). I saw a psychologist at the Archway on one appointment for an assessment and then for a further 6 appointments for treatment - these appointments were every 2,3, or 4 weeks apart depending on what they had free.

At the end of my appointments I actually felt worse - my symptons are worse now than when I started yet I have been discharged. I am not allowed any further appointments and I am now on medication prescribed by my GP.

I waited nearly a year for this treatment and I am so disappointed.

In my view the person I saw was very cold and distant and I found them hard to speak to. I don't think they smiled once in the 7 times I saw them.I asked to see someone else but wasn't allowed to.

I asked if I could try something I read about called EMDR ((Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is meant to be very good for PTSD but they did not know how to do this.

Surely if one treatment does not work you should be allowed to try something different?

Now I feel I'm left worse off than when I started and wish I had never gone there.

I would therefore like to make some suggestions.

People should be allowed to see someone they feel they can get along with.

People should be allowed to be seen long enough to be helped to feel better.

People should be allowed the treatment they ask for. I asked for EMDR and wasn't allowed.

More information should be there for you. I was given no information at all about PTSD. I had to research it on the internet myself.

Thank you for taking the time to post your suggestions and we are sorry if your experience was less than positive. If this has been your experience we would welcome the opportunity of working with you further to ensure we understand fully the difficulties you have had. Please feel free to make contact with either the Divisional General Manager, or the Trust Lead for Psychological Therapies, on 01522 518600.

For your own information, if a service user wishes a change of therapist due to an interpersonal difficulty, we do consider and facilitate this, and treatment is offered through regular appointments, unless unavoidable circumstances result in rescheduling. The service also provides treatment aimed at a therapeutic outcome, and is not limited to a certain number of sessions. Unless there is a clinical reason not to proceed, EMDR is routinely provided to people who present with trauma.

It is important that you contact us so that we can identify any further action we may take to ensure that you receive the services you need as every case is considered on an individual basis.
