"Laughing definitely helps!"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a parent/guardian),

I fortunately had a good experience of my hysteroscopy and biopsy. I had information sent to me, explaining to take ibuprofen and paracetamol half an hour before the procedure.

I had also taken a travel tablet which would have helped to keep me calm.

The doctor spoke to me about what he would do, then a nurse went through the procedure and let me know what would happen next.

I had 3 lovely nurses and the doctor, and I chatted throughout to distract myself. I could feel a sensation now and again but the conversation diverted my attention and was really helpful; laughing definitely helps!

I was given local anaesthetic and as I was also having my period, it was easier for the process to be carried out.

If anyone is worrying about having the procedure, plan ahead and get positive information. Make sure you will get local anaesthetic, take painkillers before the procedure and if you get nervous, ask your doctor for something sedating to keep you relaxed - so long as you're not driving.

Don't be put off by negative comments. Do take control of your pain relief.
