"If I go back I will insist on being discharged"

About: North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

Although some of the staff try to be understanding, often there is nothing they can help you with due to ward environment where it feels the few get away with any type of behaviour.  At the moment it seems that you are forced to go through nights of sleep deprivation but when you attempt to catch up in the day you are blamed for it, so you don't and when it catches up on you and makes you feel worse it feels obvious that no one will do anything about it.

I think the ward is not fit for purpose and I have heard staff agree with me. There is no one to turn to if you are a formal patient as you are at the mercy of what seem arbitrary decisions of the nurses and doctors. And then they wonder why people snap whilst they are there. It is anything but a therapeutic environment. Everyone seems to be pinning their hopes on the New Build but the rooms won't be soundproof and they will yet again be cutting down on beds. Adding a gym and a garden is not going to eradicate the permanent problems on the ward. If I go back I will insist on being discharged because the place makes me feel worse. What more can I say?

Dear Crystal111

I am very sorry to hear that you had a negative experience whilst on one of the wards. I fully understand that these environments can be very noisy and often quite challenging when you are trying to recover. I would like to reassure you that the new ward leadership team and ward staff are working very hard currently to improve the ward environment and ensure that all service users get the care and support that they need to facilitate a speedy recovery.

All patients on the ward who are detained under the mental health act have access to an independent mental health advocate who can support them through the mental health act process and the admission. If you were not advised of this then please accept my sincere apologies as this is not acceptable and I will raise this with the ward manager to ensure patients have access to this service.

Please be reassured that I will pass on your concerns to the ward leadership teams and thank you for your feedback.

Many thanks

Karen Daniels
