"No hand sanitizer"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Medicine (Wards 5 & 8)

(as a relative),

I was in visiting my father in law In wd6 and when entering the ward I always use the sanitiser and also when leaving. As I was leaving with my husband and son there was none left so I mentioned to the nurses and they were like OK and then went on to say oh I don't know how to change it or where the key is. I visited again today and guess what no hand sanitizer. I'm deeply concerned regarding this. My father in law has cancer and this is always why I use the gel before and after visiting.

Dear concerned 846,

Thank you for taking the time to highlight your concerns on patient opinion.

This is not the standard of infection control and prevention that we would expect and I would like to apologise that the hand gel to the ward enterance was not replaced when this was raised to the staff by you.

I can reassure you that this was replaced when your posting was read and this was confirmed by the Clinical Night Manager and communicated this to the management team.

The Charge Nurse of the ward has spoke to the staff on duty and this will be raised daily at the ward patient safety brief to ensure we capture all staff are learn from your experience.

The ward Senior Charge Nurse will be asked to review the current process to check and replenish the hand gels and put measures in place to prevent this occurring again.

Best Wishes

Andy
