"More relaxed than expected ! Surgical abortion"

About: Bpas (merseyside Clinic)

I just want to write a review to give some form of insight into what happens before/during / after abortion. I opted for the surgical abortion (asleep) I chose this method so that I would go asleep , not feel / remember a thing, then wake up and it be all over with. This was the right decision for me! When I arrived I filled out some medical history and had a discussion with a member of staff , just to check it was the right decision etc... then did a chlamydia test and waited again. The waiting room was fine , tv on and people just chatting away to their partners , or on my case reading a book! I then got called for the scan by a lovely person. They kept calling me honey bunch , made me feel really at ease! I had my scan done , they turned the pictures around and put them in my file so I couldn't see . Told me I was 7 weeks and had a chat over contraception (I chose to have mirena coil) ... I then waited for approx 30 mins and then went upstairs got into a green gown with 4 other ladies. Had a laugh with the nurse and the HCA over partners and friends , again felt really at ease!

I then went into a small room led on the trolley and the nurse held my hand and reassured me , at this point I got a bit nervous ! Anaesthetic was put in and I felt a funny taste in my mouth and a tingling in my arm and I was gone. When I woke up a nurse was next to me chatting away asking how I feel , (I felt drunk) and to be honest I can't remember what else we was talking about. I got wheeled to another level and relaxed in a recliner chair with a glass of water ... had a few cramps (like mild period dull aches) and then went off to get changed and sat and eat some biscuits and a cup of hot chocolate. Had cannula removed and discharge notes given & swallowed some antibiotics etc and then off I went! I was there 3.5 hours in total from start to finish. I'm bleeding the tiniest bit ever and I feel great. Thankyou to all the staff at bpas that made me feel relaxed and less guilty about my decision! I can now resume my life with my family and put this day behind me. Please anybody scared about the procedure please don't be!

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback, which I am sure will be extremely helpful to other women who are looking for guidance prior to their treatment.

We are also grateful for your very kind comments which will be passed on to the relevant BPAS staff.

Kind regards, Pam Field, BPAS Client Engagement Manager (email: clientservices@bpas.org).
