I have brittle bone disease and needed surgery to correct a deformed leg bone after a bad break two years ago. So it's been a long time coming needing this surgery. I've been unable to walk and been wheelchair bound for most of the last two years and putting things like further education and jobs on hold. My surgery was given the provisional date for the middle of November and we were given no indictaton it wouldn't be this day. I had my preassessment in October. This surgery got pushed back a week which wasn't too bad. But then got cancelled, I was told it was due to emergencies at the time however speaking to other people it turns out there was just more urgent cases, so I think that was told a fabricated lie. Then I was given a date in early December. I wasn't thrilled as this was my birthday week and had to wait a further two weeks, in which I suffered with pain. Throughout all this time and even now I had iritis due to the stress, anxiety and depression this situation was causing me. I got a call telling me it was cancelled and pushed back a week to mid-December (which was getting dangerously close to Christmas which wasn't my plan). I was so angry and frustrated but desperate to sort out the pain I accepted it. Then that got cancelled. The last two times were due to them being short staffed (two weeks in a row? ridiculous! ) I got offered a date but I refused as it was Christmas week and wanted to be with my family. This wasn't what I particularly wanted (postponing the inevitable and the pain wasn't ideal but what choice did I really have? ) My new date is ealy January, but the anxiety and stress is keeping me up at night. I dread the phone ringing - I keep feeling like they'll cancel it again. I don't have much trust and faith in them right now. I would love to know how many times a hospital is allowed to cancel a patient? Surely it's unfair to people? Anyways, that's my story. If anyone had any idea of the laws surrounding cancelled surgeries please let me know!
