"Repeated cancelled operations causing anxiety"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary / General surgery

(as the patient),

I have brittle bone disease and needed surgery to correct a deformed leg bone after a bad break two years ago. So it's been a long time coming needing this surgery. I've been unable to walk and been wheelchair bound for most of the last two years and putting things like further education and jobs on hold. My surgery was given the provisional date for the middle of November and we were given no indictaton it wouldn't be this day. I had my preassessment in October. This surgery got pushed back a week which wasn't too bad. But then got cancelled, I was told it was due to emergencies at the time however speaking to other people it turns out there was just more urgent cases, so I think that was told a fabricated lie. Then I was given a date in early December. I wasn't thrilled as this was my birthday week and had to wait a further two weeks, in which I suffered with pain. Throughout all this time and even now I had iritis due to the stress, anxiety and depression this situation was causing me. I got a call telling me it was cancelled and pushed back a week to mid-December (which was getting dangerously close to Christmas which wasn't my plan). I was so angry and frustrated but desperate to sort out the pain I accepted it. Then that got cancelled. The last two times were due to them being short staffed (two weeks in a row? ridiculous! ) I got offered a date but I refused as it was Christmas week and wanted to be with my family. This wasn't what I particularly wanted (postponing the inevitable and the pain wasn't ideal but what choice did I really have? ) My new date is ealy January, but the anxiety and stress is keeping me up at night. I dread the phone ringing - I keep feeling like they'll cancel it again. I don't have much trust and faith in them right now. I would love to know how many times a hospital is allowed to cancel a patient? Surely it's unfair to people? Anyways, that's my story. If anyone had any idea of the laws surrounding cancelled surgeries please let me know!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experiences within the Musculoskeletal Services Directorate, RVI at Newcastle Hospitals. I am sorry that you have experienced cancellations of dates for surgery in both November and December 2016 and for the understandable anxiety and concern this has caused you. Unfortunately on occasion it is necessary to reschedule elective procedures in order to accommodate trauma and urgent patients who require immediate surgery on admission, this was further impacted upon in December 2016 by shortages in theatre nursing staff resulting in short notice cancellations of theatre sessions.

I would wish to offer you a sincere apology that most regrettably this has been the case on two separate occasions since November 2016.

I would like to reassure you that all patients who have their procedure postponed under such circumstances are rescheduled at the earliest possible opportunity and am pleased to note that you advise of a new date in early January 2017. May I again offer an apology if this was not fully communicated or explained to you at the time which I am sure would have reduced your level of uncertainty and the subsequent concern and stress this has clearly caused you.

I have taken the issues you raised very seriously, should you wish to discuss these matters further please contact Mr Phil Powell, Directorate Manager of Musculoskeletal Services on 0191 2336161 ext. 4806.
